Appointments - booking
You can either book online or call the practice to speak to one of our trained Patient Services Advisors; they will ask you to give a brief indication of the nature of your problem/concern. This will ensure you see the most appropriate health professional as soon as possible. Please note this may not be a GP.

Abdominal Pain
If you are experiencing sudden onset,or severe abdominal pain, you can attend the next Urgent Access Clinic. If your pain is too severe to wait for assessment in that clinic then you should call 111 who may advise you to attend A&E. For longstanding, or less severe pain, please book the next available routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Acute Asthma
If you are short of breath to the point you cannot complete a sentence call 999 now. Otherwise, if it is before 10am you can attend that day's Urgent Access Clinic. If it is past 10am, and you are needing to use your Salbutamol more than 10 puffs/hour, then please call 0116 295 0600 for an emergency review with the duty doctor.
Alcohol Advice

Anxiety
You can access counselling directly by completing the self-referral form at Lets Talk Wellbeing or call 0115 876 0157. Alternatively you can book a routine appointment with a GP online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Back Pain
In the first instance you could visit your Community Pharmacy and/or have a look at NHS Back Pain Advice. If your condition is not resolving with the above measures then please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic.
Blood Pressure Monitoring
Please ask a member of Patient Services to help you use the machine in reception if you wish to check your Blood Pressure. Alternatively, you can book in with a Health Care Assitant to have a blood pressure check. If you would like to discuss medication or lifestyle changes related to blood pressure please call 0116 295 0600 and ask for an appointment with the practice pharmacist. Blood Tests
The practice offers a walk-in phlebotomy clinic every weekday between the hours of 08:15-10:15. Please note midweek days tend to be less busy and your wait will be shorter. If you need to request a blood test be arranged please speak to a member of the Patient Services team on 0116 295 0600.

Boils
If the boil is new and causing you pain, or high temperature, then please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. Otherwise book a routine GP appointment either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Breathlessness
If you are short of breath to the point you cannot complete a sentence you should call 999. Otherwise, if it is before 10am please attend that day's Urgent Access Clinic, after 10am call to speak to the duty doctor. Please note: if the breathlessness is longstanding and/or mild then you should book a routine GP appointment. Please either book online or call 0116 295 0600.
Breastfeeding Advice
In the first instance please visit NHS Breastfeeding Advice . Your Health Visitor can also provide support with breastfeeding. If the problem remains unresolved then you will be advised to make an appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600
Bruised Ribs
If you are experiencing difficulty breathing please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. You should attend A&E if the breathlessness is too severe to wait until the clinic. If you are not breathless then please consult your Community Pharmacist. They will advise you to see your GP if they cannot resolve your problem.
Burns
If severe you should attend the Urgent Care Centre at Leicester Royal Infirmary the same day. Otherwise please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. See the following for first aid advice: NHS Burns and Scalds Advice.
Cellulitis (Skin Infection)
For longstanding cellulitis that is not resolving, in a patient who is otherwise feeling well, please book a routine GP appointment online or by calling 0116 295 0600. If you feel unwell/feverish, or have new onset suspected cellulitis, please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic.
Cervical Smears
Once you have received an invite please book an appointment with a Practice Nurse either online or by calling 0116 295 0600. The appointment should be on a day when you are not bleeding or on your period. If you have not received an invite but think you should have please call Patient Services on the number above.
Chest Infection
Please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic if your symptoms are severe or you have a long-term chest condition such as Asthma or COPD. Otherwise please attend the next available clinic if your symptoms persist for more than one week; if you are otherwise fit and well most chesty coughs are viral and will self resolve within that time. Speak to your local pharmacist about how to manag your symptoms at home.
Chest Pain
Call 999 if you have sudden onset chest pain (lasting for more than 15mins) and/or pain that spreads to your arms, back, neck or jaw, makes your chest feel tight or heavy, and/or started with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea. For other pains to the chest please attend the next available Urgent Acess Clinic. If you require further advice in the meantime please call 111.
Children's Immunisations
Please book an appointment with the Practice Nurse either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Chronic Pain
If are living with chronic pain please visit the following website for expert help and advice: www.livewellwithpain.co.uk. For advice on pain control medications please make an appointment with the Practice Pharmacist. If your symptoms are getting worse or changing please feel free to make an appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Chronic Heart Disease
You will be sent an appointment for an annual comprehensive health check. If you do not hear from us after a year has elapsed please contact the surgery. If you feel your heart disease is getting worse please book a routine GP appointment either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Coils or Implants
If you already have a coil or implant and wish to have this removed please book a telephone appointmen to discuss this with Dr Metcalfe or Dr Sellen. If you wish to discuss having a coil or implant inserted please book a routine appointment with the GP of your choice. Appointments can be booked online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Cold Sores
Please see your local pharmacist or have a look online at NHS Cold Sores Advice.
Colds
Antibiotics are not needed for common colds as they are caused by viruses. Please consult your local pharmacist or visit NHS Common Cold Advice.
Constipation or Piles
If you have active rectal bleeding please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. Otherwise please first consult your local pharmacist and if they cannot resolve the problem book a routine appointment with your GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Contraception & Family Planning
You can either make a routine appointment with a GP or Practice Nurse at the surgery or you may wish to access a local Family Planning/Sexual Health Clinic.
Cough
In the first instance either consult your local pharmacist or consult NHS Cough Advice. If your cough persists for more than three weeks please book a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Cystitis
Please consult your local pharmacist in the first instance. If they cannot resolve your problem, or you have symptoms additional to typical cystitis (e.g. fever, vomiting, back pain), then please attend the next available urgent access clinc.
Dementia Screening
Please book a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600. It would be helpful for you to bring a relative/carer who knows you well to the appointment.
Dental Problems
It is not possible for the practice to provide dental care. If you have a dental problem you should consult your dentist. If you need emergency dental care please call 03300 417 062 between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week, or NHS 111 outside of these hours.
Depot Injection
Please book an appointment with the Practice Nurse either online or by calling 0116 295 0600. For first injections, the appointment will either need to be with Cath Morgan or one of the doctors. Alternatively, you can attend a local Family Planning/Sexual Health Clinic.
Depression
If you are in crisis you can either attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic or call 0808 800 3302 for support 24 hours a day 7 days a week. If you would like to directly access counselling please visit Lets Talk Wellbeing or call 0115 876 0157. If you would like to speak to a GP then please make a routine appointment either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Diabetes Monitoring
You will be invited in for a comprehensive annual review. If you have not heard from us after a year has elapsed then please call the surgery. If you have a general query about your diabetes please visit Leicestershire Diabetes.
Diarrhoea
In the first instance please consult your local pharmacist. If despite seeing your pharmacist you are worried your symptoms are severe or that you are becoming dehydrated then please attend the next Urgent Access Clinic. Further advice is available at NHS Diarrhoea and Vomiting Advice.
Diet & Lifestyle Change
If you are interested in improving your exercise levels and/or diet then please call 0116 222 7192. Alternatively you can book in for an NHS Health Check with a HCA Online or by callling 0116 295 0600.
Dizziness
If your symptoms are mild then your local pharmacist should be your first point of contact. If the symptoms are more severe, or have not responded to help from your pharmacist, then please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. Further information is available at NHS Dizziness Advice.
Dressings
Please make a routine appointment with the Wound/Dressings Clinic by calling 0116 295 0600. If you have a new wound that is actively bleeding you should attend your local Urgent Care Centre.
Drug Addiction
You access specialist help directly by visiting Wellbeing Turning Point. If you cannot find the help you are looking for here then please make a routine appointment to see your GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Ear Care/Ear Wax
In the first instance please visit NHS Ear Care Advice. If you think you need further help then please discuss this with your local Pharmacist. If your problem remains unresolved please then make a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Earache
In the first instance please visit NHS Earache Advice. If you think you need further help then please discuss this with your local Pharmacist. If your problem remains unresolved then please make a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
ECG
If you feel you need an ECG please first book a routine consultation with a GP to see if this is clinically indicated. Please call 0116 295 0600 to book an appointment.
Eczema
Unless your symptoms are severe, or you have other symptoms such as fever/feeling unwell, then please consult your local pharmacist in the first instance. Otherwise please book a routine appointment with a GP. If you think your skin may be infected (hot,red, weeping or feverish) you should attend the Urgent Acces Clinic. Emergency Contraception
Your local pharmacist is now able to offer Emergency Contraception free of charge. Alternatively, you could attend the local Family Planning/Sexual Health clinic. Otherwise, you can of course attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic at the surgery. Please be aware that the sooner you obtain emergency contraception the more effective it will be.
Eye Infection
Your optician can treat most urgent eye problems including eye infections. You could also access help from your local pharmacist. If these services cannot resolve your problem you should then attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic.
Eye Injuries
If you are experiencing pain, bleeding or visual disturbance you should attend the Eye Casualty Department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Outside of their working hours, you should attend A&E. For further info visit UHL Eye Casualty Department.
Fit Note (Sick Note)
You can self certify yourself as unfit to work for 7 working days and forms are available from reception. If you need a doctor's note to be issued after this time then please make a routine appointment to discuss this with your GP. If you require an extension to a previously issued note then please call patient services who can ask your doctor to complete the note. Please note that it is not appropriate to attend Urgent Access Clinic for a Fit Note.
Flu
Please consult your local pharmacist in the first instance. If your symptoms are worsening after 7 days then please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. For more information on the flu please visit: www.nhs.uk/conditions/flu/
Flu Vaccine
The practice runs annual flu vaccination clinics in the autumn. All eligible patients will be invited to attend these clinics. If you have missed the clinics and think you are eligible to have the flu vaccine please book an appointment with the practice nurse. Find out if you are eligible for the flu vaccine.

Fungal Infections
In the first instance please see your Community Pharmacist who can offer effective treatment for most fungal infections. If your pharmacist has not been able to resolve your problem please make a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600. Please note that fungal nail infections often fail to respond to treatment and require oral medication to be taken for several months requiring blood test monitoring.
General Advice

Genital Infections including Herpes
It is recommended you take advantage of the specialist expertise on offer from the NHS Leicester Sexual Health clinics. These offer both walk-in and pre-bookable appointments. Details regarding clinic locations and times are available here. Alternatively, you can make a routine appointment with your GP or attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic if your symptoms are severe.
Hay Fever
In the first instance please visit your Community Pharmacist. If they cannot provide the help you need then please book an appointment with the practices Clinical Pharmacist either online or by calling 0116 295 0600. Further information is available here at NHS Hayfever Advice.
Head Injury
If you are actively bleeding, feel drowsy, have visual disturbance or have vomited since the head injury then you should go straight to A&E and SHOULD NOT drive yourself. Otherwise, you should attend your Community Pharmacist in the first instance who will advise you if same day urgent assessment with your GP is required. If this is advised please call patient services on 0116 295 0600.
Head Lice
For adults please visit your Community Pharmacist. For children please either contact your Health Visitor or the School Nurse (your school will have their details).
Headaches
First check if your symptoms need a 999 call by clicking here. If an ambulance is not required, the headache is new, and not responding to over the counter treatment, then please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. Otherwise please make a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Holiday Cancellation Certificate

Hyperventilation
If you are confident your symptoms relate to anxiety then you may wish to self-refer directly to the local NHS counselling service. Otherwise please make a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Indigestion
In the first instance please consult your local pharmacist. If your symptoms cannot be resolved by the pharmacist then please book a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600. Further information is available at NHS Indigestion Advice.
Infected Wounds
If you have a fever or feel the infection is spreading outside of the wound please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. Otherwise please call Patient Services on 0116 295 0600 to book a wound clinic appointment.
Ingrowing Toenail
In the first instance please consult your local pharmacist. If they cannot resolve your problem please visit patient services and ask for a self-referral form to NHS podiatry. If you are worried the nail is infected please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic.
Insect Bites
In the first instance please consult your local pharmacist. It they cannot resolve your problem please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic.
Insomnia
In the first instance you should read this leaflet. Thereafter you may find it helpful to consult with your local pharmacist. Medication Reviews
In the first instance please discuss your Medication Review with a member of the Patient Services team either by calling or visiting the front desk. They may advise that you need a consultation arranging for your review. Unless you are taking medication for a Mental Health problem all medication reviews will then be booked with the Practice Pharmacist.
Missed Pill/Emergency Contraception
Your local pharmacist is now able to offer Emergency Contraception free of charge. Alternatively, you could attend the local Family Planning/Sexual Health clinic. Otherwise you can, of course, attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic at the surgery. Please be aware that the sooner you obtain emergency contraception the more effective it will be.
Moles
If your mole is dark pigment and has recently changed then you should attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. Please book the next available appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Mouth Problems
In the first instance please consult your dentist. If you need emergency dental care please call 03300 417 062 between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week, or NHS 111 outside of these hours. If your dentist advises you to then consult a GP please either attend the next Urgent Access Clinic or book a routine appointment depending on the level of urgency.
Nappy Rash
In the first instance please consult your Community Pharmacist or look online at NHS Nappy Rash Advice. If the problem remains unresolved please book an appointment with a GP either online or by calling Patient Services on 0116 295 0600.
Neck Pain
If the pain is new and accompanied by head injury or fever you should attend A&E. Otherwise, please first consult your Community Pharmacist. If they cannot resolve your problem make a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling Patient Services on 0116 295 0600.
Nosebleeds
If you are having recurrent mild short-lived nosebleeds then please book a routine appointment with either Dr Steadman or Dr Green either online or by calling 0116 295 0600. For first aid advice please visit NHS Nosebleeds Advice. If the nosebleed is severe and not stopping after 10 minutes first aid you should call 999.
Panic Attacks
In the first instance please read this leaflet. Counselling is often the best long-term treatment for panic attacks: you can self-refer without needing to see a GP at Lets Talk Wellbeing.
Alternatively you can of course book an appointment with your GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600 If you are actively having a panic attack and need to speak to someone urgently you can call 0808 800 3302 to access a 24/7 NHS support line.

Phobias

Pneumococcocal Vaccine
Please book an appointment with the practice nurse either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Prescription Queries
Your Community Pharmacist will often be able to resolve most queries. If they cannot please call Patient Services who can then arrange an appointment with the Practice Pharmacist if needed.
Rashes
Most rashes can be managed by a Community Pharmacist, so please contact them in the first instance. If they cannot resolve your problem please make a routine appointment with a GP. If the rash is new onset or hot/red then please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic.
If you have a new onset rash that does not transiently disappear when a glass is rolled over it, especially if in the presence of a fever, you should call 999.
Rectal Problems
If you are experiencing rectal bleeding then please attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. If the bleeding is severe then you should attend A&E. For all other rectal problems, in the first instance, please consult your Community Pharmacist. If the cannot resolve your problem then please make a routine appointment with a GP either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Removal of Stitches
Please book an appointment with the Practice Nurse either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Ring Pessary
Please book an appointment with Dr Sellen, Dr Metcalfe or Dr Blount either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Shingles Vaccine

Sinusitis
Most cases of Sinusitis are viral and do not require antibiotics. In the first instance please consult your Community Pharmacist and/or visit NHS Sinusitis Advice. If these avenues do not resolve your problem then please make a routine appointment with a GP or attend Urgent Access Clinic if your symptoms are too severe to wait.
Skin Conditions
If you have a new onset rash then please see the section of this menu marked 'Rashes'. For chronic skin conditions such as Eczema or Psoriasis please make a routine appointment with your GP. For enquiries related to creams and medication please arrange an appointment with the Practice Pharmacist. If you feel your skin may be infected then please attend the next Urgent Access Clinic.
Smoking Cessation
It's fantastic that you want to stop smoking and the best way to do this is with the support of the local Smoking Cessation team. They can provide a range of treatments, including advising your GP to prescribe medication to help with cravings. Please either call 0345 646 6666 or visit http://www.quitready.co.uk/.
Sore Eyes
If you have sudden onset severe disturbance of vision, trauma to your eye or severe pain to your whole eyeball you should attend Eye Casualty at the LRI. Otherwise, in the first instance, please either visit your Optician or Community Pharmacist. Most Opticians can now provide NHS free-of-charge urgent appointments for eye problems. If they cannot resolve your problem and it cannot wait for a routine appointment please attend the next Urgent Access Clinic.
Sore Penis
If you are at risk of a Sexually Transmitted Infection your first port of call should be the free to access confidential NHS Sexual Health Clinics. Otherwise please make a routine appointment with a GP or attend the next Urgent Access Clinic if the problem is new, severe, and cannot wait for a routine appointment.
Sore Throat
Most infectious sore throats do not require antibiotics. For further advice please visit your Community Pharmacist or NHS Sore Throat Advice. If your problem remains unresolved then please make a routine appointment with a GP or attend the Urgent Access Clinic if your symptoms are new onset and too severe to await a routine appointment.
Sprains
If you cannot move the affected joint, weight bear, or the affected limb has changed colour/gone numb, you should attend A&E to rule out a fracture. Otherwise, most sprains and strains do not need a GP appointment. In the first instance please visit NHS Sprains Advice. If your symptoms are not settling with these self-care measures after two weeks you can self-refer to Melton Physiotherapy by calling 01509 564 379 and quoting your NHS number.
Spirometry Testing
If you suspect you may have Asthma or COPD please make a routine appointment with your GP who will arrange Spirometry testing if appropriate.
Stings
Stings do not need a GP appointment. If you have a severe rapid reaction including lip/tongue swelling, throat swelling or shortness of breath you should call 999. Otherwise, please visit your Community Pharmacist.
Styes
If you have sudden onset severe disturbance of vision, trauma to your eye or severe pain to your whole eyeball you should attend Eye Casualty at the LRI. Otherwise, in the first instance, please either visit your Optician or Community Pharmacist. Most Opticians can now provide NHS free-of-charge urgent appointments for eye problems. If they cannot resolve your problem and it cannot wait for a routine appointment please attend the next Urgent Access Clinic.
Sunburn
Sunburn does not need a GP appointment. Please visit your Community Pharmacist in the first instance.
Tetanus Injection
If you require a routine booster please book an appointment with the Practice Nurse either online or by calling 0116 295 0600. If you are worried you have a wound that may have exposed you to tetanus please attend the next Urgent Access Clinic.
Threadworm
Threadworm does not need a GP appointment. Please visit your Community Pharmacist.
Thrush (Vaginal)
Vaginal thrush does not normally require a GP appointment. In the first instance please visit your Community Pharmacist and/or look online at NHS Thrush Advice. If you have recurrent thrush please either make a routine appointment with a GP or visit www.leicestersexualhealth.nhs.uk/
Travel Vaccinations
Please book a Travel Clinic appointment online or by calling 0116 295 0600. Please leave plenty of time before booking your appointment as you may need a course of injections before you are deemed safe to travel. Further information is available here.
Urine Infections
If this is your first suspected urine infection, you are aged under 16, or have complex long-term health conditions/medication then you should attend the next available Urgent Access Clinic. Otherwise please bring a sample (sample pots available at reception) to the front desk and complete the suspected UTI form. A nurse will call you back later that day to advise if you need antibiotics and as to any further action you need to take. For self-care advice visit NHS UTI Advice.
Vaginal Discharge
If there is any chance you may have been exposed to a Sexually Transmitted Infection now or in the past, your should first attend one of the local free NHS sexual health clinics. Otherwise please make a routine appointment with your GP. Unless the discharge is blood or severely painful it would not be appropriate to attend the Urgent Access Clinic.
Verrucae
Verrucae will self resolve but can take up to two years. You do not usually need to see a GP about verrucae. Whilst cryotherapy is an available treatment option it often does not work. For over the counter options please visit your Community Pharmacist. You should only make a routine appointment with a GP if your have exhausted pharmacy options and the verrucae are causing you pain. Verrucae will not be seen in Urgent Access Clinic.
Vitamin B12 Injections
If a doctor has advised you to have B12 injections please book an appointment with the Practice Nurse either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Vomiting
You should attend A&E if your vomit contains blood or is luminous green. Otherwise, new onset vomiting is often caused by a virus or food poisoning. You should only attend the Urgent Access Clinic if you are not managing to keep any fluid down, have complex long-term health conditions, or have other symptoms such as severe abdominal pain. Otherwise you should speak to your Community Pharmacist and/or follow the online self-care advice available here.
Warfarin Monitoring
Please make an INR clinic appointment either online or by calling 0116 295 0600.
Warts
Warts will self resolve but can take up to two years. You do not usually need to see a GP about warts. Whilst cryotherapy is an available treatment option it often does not work. For over the counter options please visit your Community Pharmacist. You should only make a routine appointment with a GP if your have exhausted pharmacy options and the warts are causing you pain.
